2009 Sesquicentennial Colorado Gold Rush Coin

Back in 1859 when the gold rush hit Colorado, a private assaying & refining company called "Clark Gruber & Co." set up shop in Denver to refine the miner's gold into coins. A common saying for those traveling to Denver at the time was "Pike's Peak or Bust", so they used Pike's Peak for the design of one of their coins. However the artist who designed the coin had never seen Pike's Peak, and so the rendition of the mountain was not accurate, but it made for a nice coin anyway:

At a coin show over the weekend I found a guy who runs his own mint in Colorado and he minted a 150 year anniversary coin to celebrate the Colorado gold rush. He has contracts with small time gold miners in the Colorado Rockies who bring him their gold and he mints them into these coins. Notice the inscription "$20: 1859 - 2009: $1000" to illustrate the value of an ounce of gold from then to now in dollars. Now this is a beautiful coin!

That is a stunning coin, but I'm surprised they actually put a dollar amount on it. Is that legal? I thought by doing so, is what separates a coin from a round, making it legal tender and only the US mint could do that.

Beautiful though. I'd love to get one of these but don't want to pay $1175 for one. I would pay $1000 though, as stated on the coin. Then hide it for 30 years and show the grandkids what gold was priced back then.

That is a beauty, I want one! $1175 is pretty steep though. I'm better off hunting for 1oz Sunshine golden eagles.

The final mintage for this issue is in: 117 proofs and 12 satin finishes.

I know a few of us GIMmers have one of these; I managed to pick one up last year, it's one of my favorites. I know ANACS grades Carr's pieces now, I'm thinking of having mine graded and slabbed.
